CANCER CLINICAL TRIAL ENROLLMENT
Innovative search technologies to bolster clinical trial enrollment

Business Challenge   :   Solution   :   Benefits

Challenge: Though advances in the fight against cancer have been notable, the manner by which clinical trial eligibility information is processed has not kept pace. The Coalition of National Cancer Cooperative Groups tracks a multitude of trials, each averaging 18 months in duration and requiring continual updates. As a result, approximately 300 revisions were made weekly to trial and patient eligibility data; resulting in repeated errors and significant delays in the transmission of the information to medical facilities. Additionally, much of the data was logged in notebooks and on disparate systems; outdating it quickly when determining patient eligibility. Xcalibur was called upon to develop an application that could streamline the process, and ensure accuracy and timeliness. The result is TrialCheckTM*.

Solution: Xcalibur developed a fully-integrated data repository and web-based application for managing clinical trial pre-screening and eligibility. Critical to the success of the system, was being able to access data from six geographically-isolated databases to pull information into a central repository for organized processing and real-time updates.

TrialCheckTM is universally accessible, able to be accessed by medical and non-medical users alike. By having several different user interfaces, TrialCheckTM's resources are effectively presented to audiences of different medical acumen (i.e., oncologists and hematologists, patient advocates, or patients) in a way that is useful and usable.

Benefits: The TrialCheckTM application has enhanced the accuracy and timeliness of the clinical trial eligibility process immeasurably. TrialCheckTM not only delivers immediate information on potential treatment options to patients, but affords more patients the opportunity to enroll in clinical trials. Xcalibur's technology and commitment have created a win-win for all parties:

Oncology offices throughout the country can access the latest, most secure and accurate data via the Internet;

In only 90 seconds, medical personnel can accurately identify appropriate clinical trials for patients through customized search functions-a vast improvement over the previous 4 hour timeline;

Doctors and patients have confidence that they are searching from the complete universe of clinical trials, without the fear they are missing out on trial that may have been a better fit.

Regardless of time or place, medical experts can access the TrialCheckTM resource with Palm and Pocket PC modules; thereby providing trial eligibility information to patients instantaneously;

TrialCheckTM's analytical methodologies simplify the Coalition's evaluation of eligibility request data to ensure that the patient's treatment is most appropriate for their condition. The Coalition can also quickly initiate new trials to fill identifiable voids;

Best of all, the streamlined application facilitates site managers' abilities to enroll more patients; leading to additional and improved treatment options, and a reduction in the drug development life cycle.

TrialCheckTM is making great strides in the health sciences industry. Now, more than ever, patients have a greater chance of finding the progressive cancer treatment options most appropriate to their conditions and entering those programs faster and more efficiently.

* TrialCheckTM is a Trade Mark of the Coalition of National Cancer Cooperative Groups, the world's largest network of clinical oncologists.
