This week marked National GEAR UP Week, a time when GEAR UP grants celebrate the movement of changing postsecondary education to being available and equitable for all students throughout our nation. Each year, GEAR UP grants celebrate with assemblies, workshops, and recognition of those who are moving the needle at the local level to ensure all students are provided the support they need to be successful. This week I have enjoyed seeing posts from several GEAR UP grants as well as organizations highlighting the celebration of GEAR UP Week.
I do not think it is coincidental that my work-aversary happens to coincide with National GEAR UP Week! Today marks the third year I have been fortunate to work with Xcalibur, an evaluation partner to many GEAR UP grants. Over the last three years, I have seen the Xcalibur team support, guide, and elevate GEAR UP professionals with participatory evaluation and professional development. I am so grateful for the leadership of Xcalibur that has allowed me the opportunity to be part of an amazing movement through GEAR UP.
While neither of them will be very happy that I’m calling attention to them, I would like to thank both Jim Brown, President of Xcalibur, and Julie Jaramillo, Director of Data Insights and Evaluation for all that you have done for both myself, our Xcalibur Evaluation team, and the GEAR UP grants we support. Without your passion and leadership, we wouldn’t be where we are today!
My hope is that while National GEAR UP Week comes to a close, the fire and passion for celebrating all that GEAR UP has done and is doing continues until next year’s National GEAR UP Week. May we stay loud, proud, and continue to advocate for our students, families, and communities!
